Amber · from afoo

Learn a language the way languages are learned.

I wanted a language app that suits my needs, so I built one around how languages are learned, drawing on my own experience as a learner and on what my training and work have taught me.

Journal

One real news story a day, at your level.

Today's Reading draws one story from the news, at your level. Listen to it, translate it if you need to, and study its key vocabulary. Then write about it.

  • Read and listen. Each story is tagged with its level, from real sources such as NHK News.
  • Key vocabulary. The words worth learning, pulled out for you.
  • Write about it. A prompt in the language, then "one win, one struggle, or one sentence you want to remember."

Chat

Write or speak from day one.

You don't have to wait until you're ready. Say it in your own words, even in English, and your chat partner answers with the phrase you need, its reading, and audio you can play. Hold to talk, or type.

  • The phrase, in context. 目が痛いです, right when you need to say your eyes hurt.
  • Hear it. Every reply has audio.
  • Speak back. 押して話す: press and talk.

Branch

Share a moment in the language.

Post something simple, in the language or with a photo. A coach checks in with small prompts, like one thing you finished today and one thing that still feels hard, each with its reading and translation.

Daily inspiration

A proverb and the weather, in the language.

Each day opens with a line worth keeping and today's local weather, written in the language you're learning, with the reading, a translation and the key words. Listen, see the context, or share it.

千日の稽古を鍛とし、万日の稽古を錬とす。
Make a thousand days of practice your training, and ten thousand days your refinement. — Miyamoto Musashi
